Emil Cohen (b. 1987) is a New York-based artist. Born and raised in Canada and the United States, Emil holds an MFA in fine arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston at Tufts University. 

His photographs have been featured in group exhibitions across the United States and in solo exhibitions at the William Scott Gallery, and Treadwell Gallery in Provincetown, MA. Most recently, he was named by Logo TV as one of their 2022 Logo30 Honorees. His work has been published in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, People Magazine and more. 

He is a proud New York, Queer, Jew.

WORK EXPERIENCE

New York City Council - 2018 - Current

Staff Photographer for New York City Council and City Hall. Travel across all five boroughs, photographing the service and stories of all 51 Council Member's. 

The New York Times –  2016-2017

Assigned and researched a wide array of news and feature photographs for all sections of the newspaper and web, with a particular emphasis on digital coverage needs. work productively with staff photographers, freelancers, agencies and all other sources of pictures, as well as editors, designers, reporters and producers. Proficient familiarity with electronic image handling, selecting, cropping and toning photographs for articles, blogs, slideshows, and visual essays. Worked under Michelle McNally.

Duties include working on and improving the content and profiles of the senator’s social media accounts such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Photograph events for the senator throughout New York State.

Museum of the City of New York – 2016

Photography teacher at the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY). Teaching students K-12 about the history of New York through photography. Conduct field trips around New York City and photography tours around the museum.

Michael Costello Studios2014

Digital archivist for painter Michael Costello in Boston, MA. Responsibilities included: Handling artwork and setting up photo studio, photographing artwork both at a macro and micro perspective, uploading images to server and following appropriate metadata and archival procedures, working in Photoshop to color correct and sharpen the images.

School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University 2013

Teacher for both Basic and Advanced Lighting for Still and Moving Images at the School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, MA. Helped facilitate students learn how to use professional lighting equipment including Profoto equipment, Dynalite Kit, Pocket Wizards, Canon Mark II and III and Speed Light Flashes. Also introduced software to help students work in post production. Software included Adobe Suite: Photoshop CC, Bridge CC, and Lightroom.
