Before she became a star on Rupaul’s Drag Race, Katya Zamolodchikova aka Brian McCook hosted a monthly drag show titled Perestroika. The show, held at Boston’s legendary Jacques Cabaret, was my first introduction to Drag performance. Of course, now with shows such as Drag Race and the recent broadway adaptations of Kinky Boots and Priscilla Queen of the Desert, “underground” might not be the first word that comes to mind when thinking of the drag community. However, while drag becomes more mainstream, Perestroika is different. These men do not put on this show in hopes to become a worldwide celebrity, nor are they there to impersonate someone else. Each individual brings a level of creativity and originality to their performances that it comes almost performance art.
In particular, Katya brings a level of creativity and originality that has separated herself from any other drag queen that I have met and therefore, the focus of this project. It’s because of her, that this show and series exists.
